About the Author

Kiley Baker is a single mum who runs her own martial arts academy, Eltham Martial Arts Academy, where she teaches and trains clients 6 days per week in both martial arts and general fitness. It is her passion to empower and instil strength, fitness and confidence in all of her students, and especially to reach out to other women such as herself.

Kiley has three children: Thaila, 10, Deshan, 7, and Sanjay, 4 years old. She obtained her Black Belt in Kyokushin Karate in May 1999, Second Dan in December 2001 and, after having her three children, was graded to rank of Third Dan in December 2013 by her instructor, Shihan George Kolovos, as part of South Pacific Independent Kyokushin. The rank of Third Dan was also recognised by Shihan Judd Reid and Chikara Kyokushin Karate in December 2015. In November 2003, she was awarded the rank of Instructor as a part of Titans Kickboxing Academy, a representative of ISS Thailand.

Kiley is a five-time Victorian Kyokushin Champion, winning her division in 2001, 2002, 2004, 2010 and 2016. She is also a three-time World Ring Karate Australia winner, including the WRKA Bantamweight title in 2002, as well as having competed and placed at both National and International events .

Kiley’s passion for teaching and passing on knowledge began in 1998 when, as a Brown Belt, she started teaching the beginner Karate class in the Melbourne City Dojo. As her love of Karate and the Japanese Culture grew, she secured a job in Japan teaching English. However, just before heading off to Japan, she was offered the role of head instructor and manager for the Eltham Martial Arts Academy which was then under control of Shihan Kolovos. After a fire destroyed the club dojo in 2000, the opportunity to take over the dojo was offered to Kiley. She moved it to the local Research Primary School Hall and Eltham Martial Arts Academy took on a new lease of life. The dojo remained at the school hall up until 2007, when Kiley made the jump to a full-time dedicated centre, and opened at the Academy’s present-day location.

Kiley is a qualified personal trainer, obtaining her Certificate III in Sport and Recreation in 2002, and then Certificate III and IV in Fitness in 2012/2013, respectively. She is always on the lookout for new ideas in relation to health, fitness and a holistic approach to both of these. Kiley can often be found attending another martial arts seminar or trying yoga, Crossfit, and other training modalities in an effort to keep her knowledge fresh and interesting, and also just for a new challenge.
